Lip Fillers, Dermal Fillers
As your body ages, it goes through many changes, and your lips are no exception. The natural ageing process can affect your appearance–it makes your facial profile become flatter, your nose more prominent, and the lower part of your face smaller in size. Additionally, ageing can also deplete the levels of your collagen and hyaluronic acid, which causes your lips to lose its natural fullness and thickness. Also, unhealthy habits can also contribute to the thinning of your lips’ volume and size. Smoking can cause reduce the fullness of your lips and develop thin pucker lines all around your mouth, which can make your look older than your age. Getting dermal fillers, such as lip filler injections is a safe, non-surgical beauty treatment that can help restore your appearance where you want it to be.

What is are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a popular non-surgical lip enhancement treatment that has got many people talking. They are a type of dermal filler injected into the lip to add volume.
While this beauty treatment helps enhance the appearance, undergoing a lip injection procedure is a personal decision. To be a good candidate for lip augmentation, you must meet the following requirements:
- In good physical health
- Have realistic expectations
- No active oral infections, including canker sores or cold sores
Unfortunately, the lip injection procedure is not for everyone. Since safety is of utmost importance in our clinic, we will conduct a thorough evaluation to determine the health and safety of the patient. Lip fillers may not be an ideal treatment for patients with health issues:
- Allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins used in hyaluronic acid fillers.
- Anaphylaxis
- Allergic reaction to numbing agent lidocaine
- Bleeding disorder
While the most common reason why people want to get lip fillers in Toronto is to increase the lip volume and size, other benefits of lip injection include:
- Enhancing the edge of the mouth helps soften the vertical lines and the fine lines around your lips.
- The enhancement of the volume of your lips helps create a natural contour and shape.
- It effectively lifts the edges of the lips to bring back its natural, youthful look.
- The lip injection results in a stronger and more defined Cupid’s bow (below the philtrum).
- Injecting lip fillers underneath your mouth helps provide support to the lips.

How to Prepare for Lip Augmentation Procedure
- During Consultation
Before your lip augmentation consultation, make a list of your current medications, vitamins and supplements, and herbal supplements. You also need to disclose your medical history, including surgical procedures, treatments, and chronic health conditions, like high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Also, disclose to your Toronto beauty professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or attempting to become pregnant. If you experience any type of skin problem (rashes, cold sores, canker sores, pimples, or cysts) in the area to be treated with lip filler, we will reschedule the procedure until the problem dissipitates.
- Day of the Treatment
Our beauty professional will use a thin needle to inject the lip filler into the different parts of your lips, including the vermillion border (edges of your lips), the Cupid’s bow (the curve in the center of your upper lip), and the oral commissures (corners of your mouth). However, you may experience a pinching sensation. A treatment duration of a typical lip filler procedure may take as little as 15 to 30 minutes.
Aftercare Tips for Lip Fillers Toronto Patients
- In case you notice a bruising at the injection site, apply aloe vera or vitamin E.
- Use a clean pack and gently apply it to your lips to help reduce swelling, bruising, itching, and discomfort.
- Do not engage in strenuous physical activities for 24 to 48 hours after the procedure. Exercise can elevate your blood pressure and heart rate, which may worsen the swelling or bruising.
- Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated.
- Avoid eating foods high in sodium as it can make the swelling worse. Instead, choose hydrating fruits and vegetables as they help your body to heal faster.
- Stay away from areas with high temperatures, such as saunas and steam rooms for 48 hours after the procedure to keep the swelling from worsening.
- Consult your doctor for pain medications that are safe to take after the treatment.
- When sleeping, keep your head elevated on pillows to minimize swelling. Avoid sleeping on your face.
- Do not apply makeup on your lips for 24 hours after the lip filler procedure.
Are lip filler injections painful?
There was a time when lip injections meant you had to endure the pain or the doctor had to make use of an injected freezing product…those days are gone. The great news is that Lip fillers now contain lidocaine which makes the process far more comfortable for the client. While a topical numbing agent can also be used, it is usually not needed because of the inclusion of lidocaine within the lip filler products themselves.
Will my lips become swollen after the treatment?
It is normal to experience some swelling after a lip injection procedure. However, it should be minimal and barely visible. The day after the procedure, the swelling will subside and your lips will look marginally smaller. It is rare for patients to experience major side effects, like excessive bruising or swelling. Temporary swelling makes it obvious that you had a lip augmentation done.
When is the recovery time after the lip filler procedure?
Although you may experience light swelling, bruising and redness following the lip filler treatment, these minor side effects will clear up within a few hours to a day. As the dermal filler works to volumize your lips, we recommend to avoid massaging the injected sites to enable the formula to settle.
Make sure to follow our post treatment advice and take certain precautions a few hours after the treatment to prevent or reduce bruising. Avoid taking blood thinning medications, engaging in exercise, and lying down on your face.
How much does lip filler cost?
Lip filler is sold by the syringe, which is sometimes referred to as a “vial”. The cost of lip filler and dermal filler injections will depend upon the product that is used along with the number of syringes/vials required to give you the result you are looking for. Because of the volume of botox & filler injections delivered at our clinic we are able to secure preferential pricing – savings that we pass on to you! Additionally, we have bi-annual specials …sign up for our newsletter to ensure that you don’t miss out.
Are lip fillers permanent?
Lip fillers are not permanent. Lip fillers are created by HA ( hyaluronic acid-base) which means the products will metabolize and eventually disappear over the coming months. Hyaluronic acid is safe and a naturally occurring sugar that is already found in our bodies, such as in our joints. The innate ability of HA to bind water makes this entire range of fillers a perfect choice for maintaining the smoothness and volume of your skin. The safety record for use of HA for injectables is excellent – that said, we encourage everyone to exercise due diligence when selecting an injector! If you are someone who has an unfortunate experience with lip fillers elsewhere, we can discuss the safety & benefits of having our injectors breaking the filler down.
Is there downtime after lip fillers?
After a lip filler/lip augmentation treatment, most clients find they are able to resume regular activities. That said, one may experience some swelling and if this occurs, it typically disappears within one week to 10 days. Tiny bruises at the injection point can also occur and these are easily covered up with makeup or foundation. To minimize the risk of bruising, we recommend that you avoid the use of any blood-thinning products such as aspirin (check with your physician), ginseng, Vitamin E for 1-2 weeks prior. Avoid alcohol 24-48 hours prior.
Combination Treatments:
We frequently have specials on injectables, whereby they are combined with other treatments such as Photo Facial, Ultherapy™, Exilis, etc for dramatic results.
