Toxins and Parabens in my skin care?

Claims such as “Paraben Free” in skin care, although more common, represent the beginning of a list of ingredients that consumers should know about with regards to possible irritants, toxins and known allergens.

Check for toxic ingredients in your skin care, your favorite products might surprise you…even the ones that claim to be “all natural”.

Parabens (methy-, butyl-, ethyl-, propyl-).

A synthetic preservative believed to be an endocrine disruptor that mimics estrogen in the body. The elevated levels of estrogen can be linked to some cancers and is suspect with regards to young girls entering puberty early.

Phthalates & Fragrances (Seldom listed in ingredients. Often hidden under “fragrance” or “perfume”)
Known to be a common allergen and irritant. * Note, fragrance labeling on a product represents an undisclosed mixture of various scent chemicals and are associated with allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Sulphates Sodium Laureth Sulphate and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate)
A synthetic, this foaming agent has shown to be a leading cause of contact dermatitis.
Dermatologists will agree that it is harsh on the skin and can be irritating to eyes and/or lungs.

Petroleum/PEG (PEG followed by a number). Often used as thickeners, solvents, softeners and moisture carriers. Petroleum ingredients have shown to cause allergies and skin irritation. Additionally they are comedogenic; therefore especially bad for those prone to breakouts.

TEA (Triethanoliamine) A strongly alkaline ingredient used as a pH balancer, fragrance ingredient and emulsifier. TEA is associated with skin and breathing problems.

Propylene Glycol Fragrance Ingredient known to be strong irritant.

Diazolidinyl Urea An anti-microbial preservative that is known as a harsh skin irritant. Found in personal care items, this formaldehyde-releaser increases the frequency of contact allergies.
